LipoTool = Adipsmeter + LipoSoft

LipoTool

A new integrated system for assessment of body fat, named LipoTool, was designed and developed in order to overcome problems of existing devices in the market. It consists of a digital skinfold calliper (Adipsmeter) for measuring skinfold thickness, capable of wireless communication with a software application (LipoSoft) in a personal computer.

Why the use of skinfold callipers?

Nowadays, the assessment of body composition by estimating the percentage of body fat has a great impact in many fields such as nutrition, health, sports, cronical diseases and others. The percentage of body fat is an important parameter in assessing the nutritional status of an individual, in the evaluation of growth, in analysing the impact of various diseases, etc.

The measurement of skinfold thickness using a skinfold calliper is a simple, non-invasive and cost-effective method for assessing body composition, and it is specially adequate for individuals with metallic prostheses, joints, stents or pacemakers, as well as amputees, pregnant women and frail older adults, where other methods are not appropriate.

Why the use of LipoTool?

The existing callipers have experienced insufficient progress, suffering from various limitations and shortcomings, namely inconsistency in the data collecting process and in mechanical characteristics.
In order to overcome many of these problems a new integrated system, named LipoTool, was designed and developed. It consists of a digital skinfold calliper (Adipsmeter) for measuring skinfold thickness, capable of bidirectional wireless communication with a personal computer software application (LipoSoft), integrating a database.

LipoTool provides more effective assessment with greater accuracy, allowing automatic data processing and recording in a database, offering the user easy handling, not requiring technicians with high degree of expertise and even allowing to conduct completely new studies (for developing models based on dynamic tissue response).

This novelty justifies patent submissions (2010) at National and International levels and has been also the reason for two awards in 2010 – 1st place Innovation in Nutrition Awards 2010 and FEUP Colheita 75.
